SEO or Google Ads: What should come first?

SEO and Google Ads solve different time horizons. The question is not which is best, but which matches how urgent the need for visibility is.

Should the budget go to SEO or Google Ads first? It is one of the most common questions B2B companies ask when the marketing budget needs to be prioritised. The answer depends on how quickly the company needs results, and what it can afford to wait for.

Google Ads gives visibility immediately. As soon as a campaign is set up and approved, the company can sit at the top of search results for the keywords it pays for. In return, visibility also disappears immediately if the budget is stopped.

SEO is the opposite time horizon. It takes time to build organic visibility, because it requires content, technical optimisation, and often a period before search engines assess the page as relevant and trustworthy for a given keyword. In return, visibility does not disappear the moment you pause.

For companies with an urgent need, for example a new launch, a seasonal campaign, or a gap in the pipeline that needs filling quickly, Google Ads makes the most sense as a first step, because the effect can be measured immediately.

For companies thinking in a longer perspective, and that want to build visibility that is not dependent on an ongoing ad budget, SEO is the more durable investment, but it requires patience and an acceptance that results come gradually.

In practice it is rarely either-or. Many companies use Google Ads to cover the keywords where they do not yet rank organically, while SEO work is built up in the background. When organic visibility matures, the ad budget can often be focused more narrowly.

What decides the order is therefore not which discipline is "best", but how urgent the need for visibility is, and how long a time horizon the company is willing to invest in. TagmembranGuide is an example of how a pure SEO-driven approach can be built up over time into an independent source of leads.

Questions we often hear

Can you skip SEO and only bet on Google Ads?
It can be done, but it means visibility is entirely dependent on an ongoing budget. As soon as the ads are stopped, visibility disappears immediately, which makes the strategy vulnerable to budget cuts.
How long does it take before SEO works?
It varies a great deal depending on competition, industry, and starting point, but it is rarely a matter of weeks. SEO should be viewed as an investment with a time horizon of several months, not a campaign with quick effect.
Should we choose the same agency or the same vendor for both?
You do not have to, but it can make it easier to coordinate the strategy if SEO and advertising are planned together from the start, instead of as two separate efforts that do not talk to each other.
